Saturday

Well you gassed her up
Behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one
In your Oldsmobile
Barrelin’ down the boulevard
You’re looking for the heart of Saturday night
And you got paid on Friday
And your pockets are jinglin’
And you see the lights
You get all tinglin’ cause you’re cruisin’ with a six
And you’re looking for the heart of Saturday night
Then you comb your hair
Shave your face
Tryin’ to wipe out ev’ry trace
All the other days
In the week you know that this’ll be the Saturday
You’re reachin’ your peak
Stoppin’ on the red
You’re goin’ on the green
‘Cause tonight’ll be like nothin’
You’ve ever seen
And you’re barrelin’ down the boulevard
Lookin’ for the heart of Saturday night
Tell me is the crack of the pool balls, neon buzzin’?
Telephone’s ringin’, it’s your second cousin
Is it the barmaid that’s smilin’ from the corner of her eye?
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye
Makes it kind of quiver down in the core
‘Cause you’re dreamin’ of them Saturdays that came before
And now you’re stumblin’
You’re stumblin’ onto the heart of Saturday night

Tom Waits

Saturday is the sixth day in the International Standard Calendar. It is named for the Roman god Saturn, god of time and wealth. Saturday is the day of review and karma;  It is a day of taking stock.  After seeing the complete picture of your week, Saturday is an excellent day to set aside the noise of life know that what remains is what matters. Restore order and balance.  Cleansing rituals are especially effective and can bring about elegant solutions to long term challenges.  Intuition and divination prevail.  Saturday reminds us to take the true measure of our days.

Saturday Customs

Saturday’s bairn must work to live.
Fortune her shall plenty give.
Little hands that busy keep
Shall the richest harvest reap.
Like the bee among the flowers
She shall spend the golden hours,
Till she feasts at last, at home,
From joy’s sweetest honey-comb.

Ernest Warburton Shurtleff

Proverbs

Corsican: There isn’t a Saturday without sun, nor a woman without love
Egyptian: Give Saturday, find Sunday
Scottish: Choose your wife on Saturday
Spanish: Between two Saturdays happen many marvels

Saidaiji Eyo Hadaka Matsuri: In Japan, on the third Saturday in February, the town of Okayama hosts the (mostly) naked man festival.  As many as 10,000 men dressed only in a loin cloth run around the ancient temple grounds and through a freezing fountain in order to purify themselves.  They then gather in a frenzied crowd to catch scented wooden stick tossed out by the monks in order to acquire luck for the coming year.

The Chap Olympiad:  An English tradition that takes place on a July Saturday in Bedford Square Gardens, it is “designed to reward panache rather than sporting prowess… honoring the sharpness of their trouser creases rather than the accuracy of their aim”.   Events include:  A tea relay, French bread javelin, umbrella jousting, and butler baiting, just to name a few.

October Fest:  A Bavarian tradition, October Fest begins on the third Saturday of September.  It is the world’s largest beer festival with a festive atmosphere including music, rides, stalls, and games.  It is believed to have begun in the early 1800’s as a celebration of the marriage of then Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
