The Excavation of Groundhog
Belonging to the family of squirrels, the groundhog goes by many names. He is also the woodchuck, the whistlepig, the marmot, and the chuckling if he is still young. Groundhogs are earth dwellers and excellent diggers. They create a comfortable home with multiple rooms and entrances. Diligently, they move a great deal of earth to create their burrow. The groundhog takes a couple of years to mature, and is relatively friendly – some even say they are easy to domesticate. Still, he is not a pushover. Groundhog has both an understanding and respect for boundaries. While groundhogs thrive nestled in the earth, they are also adept at swimming and will climb trees to survey their surroundings or escape a predator. In both the depth of their digging and the depth of their winter slumber, our friend the groundhog develops access to the well-buried unconscious.
If groundhog is whistling, listen for the message that he brings. Be aware of life cycles and dormant periods. It may be time to unearth something in the unconscious.
The Magic of Groundhog
Significant Qualities
Aware
Although groundhogs are not aggressive in defending their territory, they are deeply aware of their boundaries. Groundhog can tell when someone has crossed the line.
Deepen
Groundhog does not live on the surface of things, but rather is always digging for more. This can be applied to learning or to mastering a skill. It will likely take both time and effort.
Adapt
Not limiting themselves to a single entrance, the groundhog always has a variety of ways to go home. This ability to change course provides both safety and flexibility.
Unearth
What we can know on the surface of things is really quite limiting. Groundhog knows that there is so much more to mine for in the depths of our subconscious and is not afraid of his shadow.
Tidy
The groundhog keeps a tidy home. They have separate rooms for toileting which are routinely cleaned.

Behavior
Shelter
The groundhog makes his den in open fields and along the edges of woodlands or hedgerows. Preferring well-drained soil, they may make separate dens for the summer and the winter. These burrows can be as long as 50 feet with many levels, many rooms, and many exits. In building these elaborate homes, they may move 700 pounds of soil. To keep the burrow warm, vegetation is packed to block or filter certain openings. While they are hibernating, other animals may move into unoccupied rooms, such as opossums, rabbits, skunks, and racoons. Once abandoned, the dens are reused by foxes, otters, chipmunks, and weasels.
Range
These funny creatures are native to the eastern and central United States northward across Canada and into Alaska.
Diet
The groundhog is herbivorous, feasting on wild grasses, berries, herbs, weeds, and other vegetation. The full grown groundhog will eat over a pound of food each day. They do not store food for their hibernation, rather they double their weight and sleep it off with a slowed metabolism.
Mating
Groundhogs often wait until their second year to mate. Mating season begins early in March, when they will usually form a mated pair (although some may be a mated thruple with 2 females and one male). The He-chuck will leave the den as the due date nears.
Gestation
Gestation will last a month, with a typical 31 to 32 day gestation period. Her littler runs from 3-5 pups, although there may be as few as 1 and as many as 9. This will be her only litter for the year.
Predators
Predators include: wolves, cougars, coyotes, badgers, bobcats, and foxes. They can be pursued by humans and domesticated dogs when living in yards and farms.

They are not so contented in their houses as the woodchucks in their holes.
Henry David Thoreau
My happiness is a good deal like that of the woodchucks.
When the groundhog casts his shadow
And the small birds sing
And the pussywillows happen
And the sun shines warm
And when the peepers peep
Then it is Spring
