Friday

Friday night and the lights are low
Looking out for a place to go
Where they play the right music
Getting in the swing
You come to look for a king

Anybody could be that guy
Night is young and the music’s high
With a bit of rock music
Everything is fine
You’re in the mood for a dance

You’re a teaser, you turn ’em on
Leave ’em burning and then you’re gone
Looking out for another
Anyone will do
You’re in the mood for a dance

And when you get the chance
You are the dancing queen
Young and sweet
Only seventeen
Dancing queen
Feel the beat from the tambourine

You can dance
You can jive
Having the time of your life
Ooh, see that girl
Watch that scene
Dig in the dancing queen

Friday is the fifth day in the International Standard Calendar. The name is derived from the Norse goddess Frigg, who is often equated with the Roman goddess Venus.  These two goddesses are both associated with love, beauty and fertility.  Together they show the multifaceted role of woman as both nurturing and lustful.  Frigg is the Queen of the Norse gods and her domain was that of family guardian as a beautifully strong mother and wife.  Venus is not much of a domestic type. Rather she is a wild lover, enchanted with all things sensual.  Without a doubt, Friday is the day of love and beauty, yet clearly this may take many forms.  Friday unwraps romance, seduction, friendship, family, and all meaningful relationships.

Friday Customs

Friday’s bairn shall love and give
Sweetest life of all to live!
Pity in her heart shall bloom
E’en tor creatures weak and dumb.
In her life the world shall see
Childhood’s dearest ministry.
Like a sunbeam is her birth,
Sent from heaven to bless the earth.

Proverbs

Moroccan: If there were no cold Friday evenings no one would get married
Armenian: Because the cat was given no meat, he said it was Friday
Traditional: A Friday night’s dream on Saturday told, is sure to come true be it never so old

Casual Friday:  Casual Friday refers to an informal dress code at work.  Inspired by Hawaii’s Aloha Friday, it celebrates a laid-back feeling in anticipation of the leisure and joy of the weekend.

POETS Day: POETS day is similar to Casual Fridays.  It is an acronym for “Punch out early, tomorrow’s Saturday” or if you are British “Piss off early, tomorrow’s Saturday”.  The tradition is to leave work around 3:30pm in order to get a head start on the weekend.

Friday of Farewell (Jumu’atul-Wida): In Islam, the Prophet Mohammad declared Friday as the most blessed of the week.  Jumu’atul-Wida is the last Friday of the holy month of Ramadan.  It is celebrated with prayers for peace, harmony, and success as well as helping the poor by offerings of food.

Man/Girl Friday:  This expression refers to a person who serves as an indispensable assistant, someone who can seemingly accomplish anything.  The name is originally a reference to the character named Friday in Daniel Defoe’s 1719 novel Robinson Crusoe.
