Daffodil

Narcissus

What I can do — I will —
Though it be little as a Daffodil —
That I cannot — must be
Unknown to possibility —

Emily Dickinson

Daffodil is quite a dandy. Bright and cheery, he has an upright disposition. He is full of hope and optimism.  His grey-green leaves rise from the base of his stem with rounded tips, as he is not a sharp fellow. Instead, he is consigned simply a dull blade for play or practice.  Each bulb traditionally produces a single flower at the top of his flattened flower stalk, but there are fancy cultivars that grow in clusters. His amiability works well in groups.  The flower sports a yellow trumpet framed by three sepals and three petals which are often slightly lighter in color. Imagine his confident voice, heralding in the verdant springtime.

Sacred Story

Our story begins with a young mountain nymph named Echo. She is a talker. Zeus, who enjoys frolicking with the nymphs, enlists her help to keep Hera from discovering him. Hera realizes that she’s being played, and removes Echo’s free speech, ensuring that she can merely repeat what she hears. Shortly after this, Echo spots Narcissus hunting in the woods and falls hopelessly in love with him. Sadly, she cannot speak to him of her heart as she can only repeat what he says. He does not find this attractive. Over time, she fades away, until only her voice is left. Nemesis, the goddess of vengeance, responds to the cold heart of Narcissus by leading him to a clearing with a silver pool at its center where he catches sight of his reflection in the water and falls completely in love, with himself. He too wastes away pining for his love, much like Echo. In place of his body, all that can be found is the daffodil, looking down at the pool of water.
