Apple

The Fruit of Avalon

If you love me, if you love, love, love me
Plant a rose for me
And if you think you’ll love me for a long, long time
Plant an apple tree

The sun will shine, the wind will blow
The rain will fall and the tree will grow
And whether you comes, or whether you goes
I’ll have an apple, and I’ll have a rose
Lovely to bite, and nice to my nose
And every juicy nibble will be
A sweet reminder of the time you loved me
And planted a rose for me
And an apple tree

Malvina Reynolds

The apple tree, also called the tree of life, is a tree of the goddess. In many cultures, she is a symbol of rebirth, beauty, and love. Small to medium in size, she has a spreading canopy as if opening her arms to all around her. Her leaves are elliptical in shape with fine serration around the edges. They alternate on the branch and have a soft downy underside. The dark green of the leaves contrast with her delicate flowers, both of which bud at the same time. Her springtime adornment of flowers feeds the soul. The beautiful blooms are produced at the end of a small branch (spurs) within a cup of leaves. Her spurs for flower and fruit only form on branches that are at least 2 years old. Pale in color when open, her 5 petaled blossoms are a striking red-pink when in bud. They form in clusters of 4-6 flowers, with the center flower opening first. This blossom is sometimes called the “king bloom” as it is inclined to produce the largest fruit. Sometimes her flowers bloom before the leaves have a chance to really show themselves, leaving her looking beautifully naked, except for her floral ornamentation. And while beautiful, she does not thrive in isolation. She requires others for both pollination and adoration. Her fruit matures in late summer or autumn, growing in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, green, pink or multi-colored. The apple is considered food for ghosts and fairies and gods. Her ovary and its nurturing womb become edible. No wonder she is the fruit of legend. It is said that an apple can restore health and vigor for anyone who eats one. Bound by the seasons, the apple requires a considerable period of dormancy. In winter she sleeps, saving her energy for renewal in the spring.
